Matters of the Heart (Health and Safety)

Students at Dogwood enjoyed participating in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart Challenge for the 29th consecutive year and have raised almost $800,000 over the years. Additionally, Dogwood secured the top spot in the nation for students who watched the Hands-only CPR training video.

Last week, GOAL students also underwent CPR training, not only to gain a life-saving certification, but also to come together as a school community. GMSD's Houston Hearts Student Club played a leading role in the training, and Eden Johnson, the founder and president of the club, joined the training and club and district leaders for another milestone. All schools in GMSD are now Project ADAM certified, making GMSD the first fully certified district in TN, which means that each school now has a certified AED emergency response team in place. The Houston Hearts Club at Houston High School championed this cause, so we interviewed Eden Johnson in this week's Student Spotlight.

Hi I'm Eden Johnson, and I founded Houston Hearts Club so Houston Hearts Club serves as the student emergency team I seen here at Houston High School and so far we are the only student Emergency Response Team to be recognized in the state of Tennessee I created Houston Hearts Club because through social media I saw that Collierville had started implementing project Adam into their school due to the loss of a fellow Community member and his name was Lawson Wherry, and it really just inspired me to implement more safety procedures into schools so I thought that we should do something like that and come together as a community. Just a few days ago GMSD became a completely Project ADAM certified District. Project ADAM is a National organization that teaches people about sudden cardiac arrest and it helps implement safety procedures such as CPR training and AED use into schools all over the country. I would love to shoutout Mr. Martin, or his full name is Andrew Martin. He helps with the school coordinated Health around here, and he works with GMSD, and he is really what helped me get this started because after all I am just a high schooler at the end of the day, so I can't do all of it by myself, and he really helped me put my passions into play.
